Filling in the cracks...
Small businesses need help filling in the cracks as much as any one of us. People start a business out of love and passion for something. Creative outlet for artists or chefs, passion for helping people, growing and selling your own food, making something old look new, fixing something that is broken, all great talents worthy of building a business around.
After 20 years working in advertising I've found that where the cracks lie in these businesses is in communication with the public and marketing to the masses in an effective targeted way. I work with clients everyday in my 'real' job helping them meet their goals in marketing, but I can only do as much as their budgets allow. Most of the time I work with 100% of their alocated budgets for marketing and advertising. That's how much they love the service we provide.
Lately I've been helping friends with other aspects of their business, typically design work, and I'm loving it. There isn't a lot of money involved, in fact most of the time I exchange my service for theirs, like getting my motorcycle fixed, working out at the gym, or even dinner. Last night my friend had me help outline his new TV documentary series. It's been his labor of love for over 2 years and focuses on his lifelong passion for pursuing the need for speed. It was just fun being a part of his proces and seeing it take off and potentially become a real show. How cool is that? Check out the attached sizzle reel for the show.
For me, I get to be a problem solver and feel good about filling in the cracks for my friends' businesses. There is nothing better in my life right now than seeing a friend's dream come to fruition.
